CAIRO — President Trump’s decision to recognize Morocco’s claims over the disputed Western Sahara threatens to fire up existing tensions in the region and deprive hundreds of thousands of the territory’s inhabitants of their right to self-determination. I served as Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara from 2009 to 2017. Given that background, I’ve been asked repeatedly what I think of President Trump’s recent proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara. This foolish and ill-considered decision flies in the face of the US commitment to the principles of the non-acquisition of territory by force and the right of peoples to self-determination, both enshrined in the UN Charter.

(CNN) On Thursday, Morocco became the fourth Arab state this year to announce it would establish relations with Israel. It was another diplomatic win for the Trump administration, with US President Donald Trump tweeting that it was “a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!”. Setting aside the hyperbole — Morocco and Israel have long had a quietly amicable relationship — the Moroccans extracted a high price from the US: recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the long-disputed territory of Western Sahara.

RABAT: The United States adopted Saturday a “new official” map of Morocco that includes the disputed territory of Western Sahara, the ambassador to Rabat said. “This map is a tangible representation of President Trump’s bold proclamation two days ago — recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara,” Ambassador David Fischer said according to a statement seen by AFP.

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) strongly objects to the recent announcement that the United States of America (USA) may recognize Morocco’s unlawful assertion sovereignty over Western Sahara. Such an action, if it comes to pass, would be a denial of the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people in direct contravention of United Nations resolutions and threatens to undermine ongoing peace processes, inflame an already tense situation, and could have broader implications for international peace and security and the rights to self-determination of unrepresented nations and peoples everywhere.
