  • Western Sahara: Morocco Must Counter Pro-Polisario Narrative in US Media

Washington D.C. – Morocco has been facing a fierce and systematic media attack since President Trump announced US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara on December 10. After Stephen Zunes, — a professor at the University of San Francisco known for his hostility towards Morocco, desperate defense of the Polisario Front, and use of misinformation to achieve his agenda…

  • Israeli envoys, Jared Kushner visit Morocco after establishing relations

RABAT: Israeli envoys arrived in Morocco on Tuesday to meet the king and flesh out an upgrade of relations that was forged by the White House in a parting foreign policy push by US President Donald Trump. Led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, the Israeli…

  • Morocco, Israel to seal normalisation with first direct flight

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and advisor, is due to arrive Tuesday in Morocco from Israel on the first direct commercial flight between the two countries since they normalised ties. The flight from Tel Aviv to Rabat is seen as highly symbolic after Morocco announced on December 10 a “resumption of relations” with Israel. It also aims to showcase the achievements of the Trump administration in Middle East diplomacy, weeks before Trump is replaced at the White House by President-elect Joe Biden.

  • Trump's recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara will increase tensions in Africa

On December 10, there was an important development for North Africa when Donald Trump tweeted: “Another historic breakthrough today! Our two great friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!”. He further announced that the US now recognizes Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara. This was an unprecedented move. Last week American ambassador to the Moroccan capital of Rabat, David Fischer, announced that the US adopted a new official map of Morocco that now includes Western Sahara. In what would not be a coincidence, the US government also started talks two weeks ago to sell over $1 billion in arms to Morocco, including MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones.

  • The Sahara conflict and the terrorist threat

On October 20, 2020, an escalation of tension began between the Moroccan government and the Polisario Front. On the one hand, the Moroccan Army is involved in this conflict, and since Spain left the area, it has taken advantage of it to settle and exploit the natural resources that the area possesses, among them the largest phosphate mines in the world, an enormous fishing bank, reserves of oil, gas, iron, copper and uranium, etc. On the other side is the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguía el Hamra and Río de Oro, known as the Polisario Front, which heads the government of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which, despite lacking international recognition, has been trying to carve out a niche for itself in international geopolitics since 19761.

  • UN to discuss US recognition of Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara

The UN Security Council will hold a meeting today to discuss changes to the US’ position on Western Sahara. Sovereignty over Western Sahara has been contested by Morocco and the pro-independence Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) since the 1970s. The US and the UN had, since the 1990s, sought a referendum to determine Western Sahara’s final status. In a reversal of this decades-long policy, the outgoing Trump administration recognised Western Sahara as Moroccan territory earlier this month in exchange for Morocco’s establishment of diplomatic ties with Israel.

  • The US-Morocco quid pro quo

The recent exchange of quid pro quos between the U.S. and Morocco has been handled well by both sides, despite the ritual carping to be expected from opponents of the quid and the quo. It was the proponent of the deal in general who once announced, “Quid pro quo? That’s just what negotiation is about.” The U.S. got another endorsement of the “Abraham Accords,” made by a state that already has quiet relations with Israel, but in this case carefully phrased as a future intention, to dampen domestic opposition.
